Big sports weekend on deck

Padres/Dodgers, rain that San Diego desperately needs, college football and the start to the NFL season. Who could ask for anything more?

Padres vs. Dodgers-9/10/21 - Gaslamp Ball

There’s a lot to like about this weekend before it even gets started.

For one, it’s raining. We’ll get to the downside of that in a second, but for now let’s focus on the fact that we’re in a drought and a heatwave and this rain will help a lot with both. Also, what’s better than a weekend afternoon nap with the sound of falling rain outside your window? Nothing, that’s what.

Second, the Los Angeles Dodgers are coming to town to play a series against the San Diego Padres that is meant to start tonight. I phrased it that way because the forecast would make it seem that both tonight’s game and tomorrow’s game could be *GASP* rained out.

Luckily for both teams, they play another series in a couple of weeks and have an off day before that series starts. If any of these games get rained out, the teams can just agree to play on that day instead of trying to deal with a doubleheader in the middle of a playoff chase (at least for the Padres).

Third, and I know this is a bit controversial in San Diego (which I understand), the NFL season kicked off last night and there will be 14 live-action regular-season football games played on Sunday. Not to mention all of the college football action we’ll see on Saturday.

This is the beginning of Fall, a sweet spot where baseball and football are playing meaningful games at the same time. Once baseball wraps up, hockey and basketball will join the mix. The long summer, when baseball is the only sport going, is finally over. Drink it in.
