Flexing the old muscle
Writing down some thoughts just to say write them down and say hello.
Hi. I know it’s been a while since I’ve written anything here, and for that I suppose I owe an apology for anyone who came to rely upon these posts. (Thank you to all of the people who have told me they missed them. It’s a real confidence booster.) But also, find something more meaningful to get you going in the morning. I recommend coffee.
My absence has been the result of a confluence of things…
For one, this blog/newsletter started a few months after I lost my job. I had a lot of time on my hands. I started new hobbies and resuscitated this old one, at least for a while.
Luckily for me, although not for this writing institution, I am no longer unemployed. I am still picking up new hobbies, and ignoring some old ones, but most of my time over the last 6 months or so has been dedicated to my job as the producer of this.
For two, I had mostly been writing about the San Diego Padres, a team that nobody in their right mind would’ve kept writing about on a daily basis in July and August because they were disgustingly bad and frustrating. Once my job started, it was a convenient excuse to forget about the Padres each morning instead of reliving whatever pain they had put me through the night before.
For three, I’m not quite sure what to write about if it’s not the Padres. I’ve toyed with writing about the NBA or the NFL or even the San Diego Loyal on here, but the response has always either been crickets or anger.
I’ve talked with some talented friends about doing guest posts here but it felt disingenuous for me to ask that of them when I wasn’t dedicating time to this space on my own.
I’m not even sure what I meant to accomplish by writing this post today, but I know I miss writing. And, because my job is directly tied to the NFL season, I’m about to have more freedom and flexibility to spend my mornings sipping coffee and musing about whatever on here. Maybe consider this a warning?
I’d be foolish to try and start writing about the San Diego Padres right now. There’s a lockout happening. The MLB season probably isn’t going to get started on time and the offseason has ground to a halt (after the Padres made some moves that I really liked!). There’s nothing to cover or talk about until that changes.
So I guess I’ll just start writing about whatever I feel like. Sometimes that’ll be sports, sometimes that’ll be music, sometimes that’ll be life or parenthood or golf (a new hobby!) or trivia. If that suits you, I’m glad to have you as a reader. If it doesn’t, feel free to unsubscribe or ignore these emails until the MLB gets its shit together. I won’t take it personally.
See ya around.
