I don't care for the All-Star Game
We all have our flaws. Here's one of mine.
This one is going to be short.
I don’t care for the MLB All-Star Game and never really have. I don’t like the all-star games in other sports, either.
I understand why they exist. They make money, they’re entertaining, and they’re a way to give players a much-needed break in the middle of the season, but I can’t bring myself to watch them.
It’s not even just that it’s a meaningless game, I watch plenty of spring training and preseason and Summer League games in my life, it’s more about the team and the (as Jerry Seinfeld refers to it) “laundry” of it all.
I am a San Diego Padres fan, not a fan of the National League All-Stars. Do I like Joe Musgrove? Absolutely, and I root for him every time he pitches for the San Diego Padres. There’s a decent chance he pitches in the same game next year but representing another team.
Probably the only time I ever cared about an MLB All-Star Game was when it was in San Diego, at Petco Park. In that way, the event became more than just television and it also became a representation of the city that I live in and am proud of. (It was also not long after I had moved back to San Diego, so it was a little extra special to hear everyone talk about what a special place it is.)
Anyway, if you’re wondering why you’re not getting coverage of (*checks notes*) Manny Machado going 0-for-2 in a start, Jake Cronenworth going 0-for-2 off the bench, or Joe Musgrove striking out two batters in a clean inning of work…that’s why.
Bandwagon Beach is a lot of things, and hopefully will become more things as it continues chugging along, but it will never be your MLB All-Star Game breakdown destination. Sorry about that.
I want to do a mailbag tomorrow and then a “2nd half preview” on Friday, so go ahead and send in any questions you have now!
