Machado and Hosmer are carrying the Padres offense
The two highest paid players in the Padres lineup are producing like it, and it's leading to a bunch of wins.
I’m not sure if anyone else finds this as funny as I do, but check this out:
Hosmer and Machado: 375/.452/.609
The rest of the Padres: .186/289/.301
Like, I get it, we want everyone to hit well. If the entire offense was hitting well, the chances of the Padres winning every game goes up. I know it might be hard to find the hilarity in this for some, but after years of complaining about the Padres wasting so much money on the big contracts for Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers, it is hilarious to me that the two big-money hitters in the lineup are the ones that are coming through right now.
That’s how it’s supposed to work, though, right?
The Padres payroll is very top-heavy. It’s mostly starting pitchers at the top though. Ignoring the injured players, watch this dropoff in salary by position players this year:
Machado: $32M
Hosmer: $21M
Profar: $7.3M
Kim: $7M
Alfaro: $2.75M
Yes, you’re reading that right. Without Fernando Tatis Jr. or Wil Myers or Luke Voit (who only makes $5.45M anyway), the highest-paid hitters in the Padres lineup after Machado and Hosmer are Jurickson Profar, Ha-Seong Kim and Jorge Alfaro. And I’m not sure any of them were signed to be starters.
Anyway, let’s dig in a little bit deeper on Machado and Hosmer today. They’ve earned it.
