Should the Padres trade for Juan Soto?
Yes. But there's more to it than that.
Good morning. Sorry about missing Friday’s post, I had the week from hell. One thing that weekend did give me, though, was plenty of time to sit around and think about the swirling Juan Soto news.
Allow me to sum up the situation for anyone that might’ve been stuck under something heavy…
Juan Soto is a generational hitter. He’s 23 years old with 2 years of team control left. The Washington Nationals offered him a contract extension, the total amount of which would’ve been the largest contract in baseball history, and he rejected it. Now, they’re shopping him in a trade in an effort to get back prospects.
To put into context how good Soto is, he would probably immediately be the best player on any team he’s traded to (including the Padres).
The answer to “Should the Padres trade for Juan Soto?” is an easy yes, as it would be for any franchise. Should you try to acquire maybe the best player in baseball at 23-years old with years of team control left? Duh. But, the question is more about what you’d have to give up to get him. In this case, we might be looking at the biggest package of prospects ever given up for a single player.
